A Ferrari 456M GT search becomes much clearer when the transmission is established before the color. The GT’s six-speed manual is central to its touring character, and its supporting documentation should make the factory configuration easy to understand. The similarly named GTA needs to remain a separate comparison.
Ferrari’s historical archive places the 456M GT in 1998. For an American specification reference, the US-version model-year 2003 owner’s manual, issued in September 2002, provides a precise anchor. It identifies the 5,474-cc V12 and a US rating of 436 SAE-net hp at 6,250 rpm. Keep that model-year scope attached to the figure.
Verify the manual configuration
The factory manual describes six synchronized forward ratios plus reverse, selected by a gear lever, with the differential in the same gearbox assembly. For a used example, request the VIN, original specification records and clear interior photographs before building a comparison around its transmission.
The visible gated lever is one piece of evidence. Match it with the factory record and the car’s service history, including any disclosed conversion or replacement work. If the documentation is incomplete, ask the inspecting specialist what can be established and what remains uncertain.
At the viewing, check that the seating position permits comfortable full clutch travel. Following the preliminary safety checks, evaluate engagement and gear selection on a suitable legal-speed route. Give the specialist a clear account of any behavior you notice instead of trying to diagnose the transmission during the test drive.

Test the four-seat routine
Rear-seat access is part of the model’s practical appeal. The US manual describes powered front-seat travel when the backrest is tilted forward, along with a procedure for restoring the stored driving position. Have the seller demonstrate the operation on both sides.
Bring the people who will actually use the car where practical. Check access, seating position and comfort with the front seats adjusted for their normal occupants. A photograph of an empty rear cabin cannot tell you whether the arrangement suits a particular group.
Include climate controls, windows and other cabin equipment in that demonstration. Ask the inspector to record defects individually and obtain estimates for identified work. A touring purchase is easier to judge when small usability issues are visible before the agreement is made.
Luggage has its own specification
The model-year 2003 manual describes a dedicated GT luggage set available on request: medium and large suitcases, a shoe case, a vanity case and a garment cover. Its GTA list differs, omitting the garment cover. That detail is worth preserving when a listing advertises factory luggage as part of the package.
Ask the seller to lay out the actual pieces, document their condition and confirm that they are included. Check any identifying details and fit rather than assuming a similarly colored set belongs to the car. If you plan to use your own bags, take them to the viewing and test the available space.
Build a complete touring file
Keep M-generation documentation separate from material about the original 456 GT. Equipment descriptions can change across the model family, and an earlier brochure does not establish what came with a later car.
Commission a Ferrari-specific mechanical and body inspection, then bring the findings together with the service records, factory configuration and included accessories. Establish a practical support plan for the journeys you expect to make, without relying on an unverified generic maintenance interval.
Finally, separate the asking price from transport, dealer charges and applicable tax or registration estimates in the US-dollar proposal. A well-supported 456M GT purchase connects the manual V12 driving experience with the passenger, luggage and service details that make the car usable as a tourer.
