The Ferrari Testarossa is easy to recognize and surprisingly easy to misread. Its horizontal side strakes became a shorthand for the 1980s, yet the shape begins with a mechanical decision. For a US buyer considering an original Testarossa coupe, understanding that decision gives a more useful inspection brief than treating every painted surface as decoration.
This is a historical ownership guide to the model introduced at the 1984 Paris Motor Show. It does not describe the later 512 TR, F512 M or modern 849 Testarossa, and the photographed car is an illustration of the original model rather than a vehicle offered by Big Boy Exotics.
Follow the cooling layout
Ferrari’s history of the original Testarossa explains how moving the radiators toward the rear removed the need for the long hot-water pipes of the preceding layout. Pininfarina shaped the wide rear body around that arrangement, using the horizontal elements along the sides to screen the radiator openings. The rear treatment echoed those lines across the rectangular lamps.
That relationship suggests a practical buying question: what has happened behind the attractive paint? Ask a qualified Ferrari specialist to inspect the cooling system and the condition of the surrounding openings, panels and attachments. Request documentation for any repairs or replacement parts. A polished exterior alone cannot establish whether the underlying system has been maintained or repaired correctly.
Photograph both sides in comparable light. Uneven gaps, mismatched finishes or a seller’s account of previous work are reasons to investigate further, not proof of a particular accident or mechanical problem. Have the specialist interpret the evidence before reaching a conclusion.
Keep the model identity precise

The family resemblance can blur important distinctions in online listings. Ferrari’s account of the 512 TR describes revisions to the grille, wheels, rear buttresses and mechanical package, with its public debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show in 1992. Both cars retained pop-up headlights, so that single feature will not settle the question.
Build the shortlist from the vehicle identification, model year and original-market documentation. Ask whether the present bodywork, wheels and interior correspond to the car’s original specification. A component can be genuine Ferrari equipment without being the correct original fitment for the particular car you are considering.
Make the garage part of the inspection
Bring measurements from your actual parking space, including the narrowest opening, shelving and the area needed to exit the seat. Measure the specific car and its usable clearance in inches. A published body-width figure cannot account for every mirror position, door-opening requirement or awkward approach angle.
If the seller permits it, test entry and exit with the seat adjusted for your driving position. Consider visibility while reversing and how you will position the car without relying on modern parking aids. These are ownership-fit questions, best answered slowly and safely with another person guiding the maneuver.
Separate authenticity from present condition
Ferrari’s March 12, 2022 description of Classiche explains the role of historical assembly records and authenticity certification. If a seller presents certification, ask to see the complete documents and establish when they were issued and what work followed.
For your purchase decision, review that history alongside a current independent inspection, dated service invoices and an itemized ownership budget. Set aside room for findings that emerge after the specialist examines the car. The right Testarossa is one whose identity, physical condition and practical fit have all been established before the design does the persuading.
