Ferrari 328 GTS: Give Bosch Injection a Cold-and-Warm Evaluation

A Ferrari 328 GTS inspection should include more than a warm engine idling for a camera. Arrange to observe the car from a genuinely cold start, through a normal road evaluation and into a warm restart. Those stages give a specialist a more useful account of how its fuel-injection system behaves.

This is a way to structure a purchase assessment, not a remote diagnosis. The observations matter most when they can be matched to the car's specification and documented maintenance.

Place the engine in its own chapter

Ferrari's historical account of the 1985 introduction identifies the 328 as the final development of its two-seat, naturally aspirated transverse-V8 series that began with the 308. The name refers to approximately 3.2 liters and eight cylinders; the engine has four valves per cylinder.

For a US purchase, obtain the handbook appropriate to the actual model year and market. The factory owner's manual for 1988 US models, reproduced by Manualzz, provides a useful period reference. Its instructions should be checked against the individual car and current specialist advice.

A mechanical core with electronic feedback

Bosch's history, drawn from a 2007 lecture, explains the K-Jetronic principle: an airflow sensor plate is mechanically linked to fuel metering. That makes the condition and calibration of the physical metering equipment important to understanding the system.

The 1988 US Ferrari handbook identifies K-Jetronic injection with oxygen-sensor feedback. It also describes a warm-up regulator, auxiliary air valve and cold-start injector. These components perform different jobs during starting and warm-up, so one brief observation cannot establish that every operating stage is satisfactory.

Ask who will inspect the system and whether that technician regularly works with this generation of Ferrari. Experience with the relevant equipment is a more useful selection criterion than a general claim to service exotic cars.

Arrange the first start in advance

Ask the seller to leave the car unstarted before the appointment and agree how long it will have been parked. Record the ambient conditions, odometer reading in miles and the seller's description of its recent use. If it has already been driven, record that limitation rather than labeling the demonstration a cold start.

The 1988 handbook specifies an automatic fast-idle function and tells the driver to leave the accelerator alone until the engine runs smoothly. It gives the same starting procedure for a warm engine. Have the seller or technician demonstrate the procedure appropriate to the car, without repeated unsuccessful attempts or improvised throttle routines.

Observe the transition as the engine warms. Note persistent hesitation, stalling or an inconsistent idle for the inspector to investigate. Avoid assigning a failed component from a sound, video or single symptom.

Finish the evaluation while warm

Once the specialist considers the car ready, include ordinary acceleration, steady cruising and normal stops at legal road speeds. After the agreed drive, observe a warm restart. Keep the timing and circumstances with the inspection notes so another workshop can understand what was actually tested.

Ask the technician to connect any concerns to measured findings and recommend the next diagnostic step. If further work is needed, obtain an itemized US-dollar estimate before treating the asking price as the total acquisition cost.

Keep the rest of the car in view

The injection evaluation belongs within a full mechanical and body inspection. Review dated invoices, mileage progression and the scope of earlier servicing.
