The modern Bentley Mulsanne makes its case through the way it delivers effort. Its 6¾-liter twin-turbocharged V8 belongs to a long engineering lineage, but the car introduced at Pebble Beach in 2009 was a fresh flagship project. That combination helps explain why an early Mulsanne can appeal to someone who already owns a much faster modern car.
The attraction is not limited to acceleration. It includes how a substantial sedan responds to modest requests, how its cabin is made and what sort of journey the owner wants to take.
An old lineage in a new car
Bentley's February 2020 history identifies the Mulsanne's engine as a development of the L-Series V8, whose production history began in 1959. The same account describes an entirely new chassis and electrical architecture for the modern Mulsanne.
Both parts matter. A long-running engine family can preserve recognizable character while undergoing extensive development. At the same time, sharing a lineage does not make the surrounding vehicle interchangeable with its predecessors.
For an early modern Mulsanne, Bentley quoted 505 bhp and 752 lb-ft of torque. The torque figure is especially useful in understanding the brief: a luxury sedan needs readily accessible propulsion when carrying people and luggage, without demanding constant attention from the driver.
Engine output alone cannot establish refinement. Gear selection, accelerator calibration, sound isolation and the condition of the individual car all influence the result. The meaningful question is how naturally those elements work together during ordinary travel.
A different way to value performance
Bentley's heritage archive gives the original model a factory 0–60 mph time of 5.1 seconds. That establishes the car's capability, but it is a narrow measure of what makes this particular sedan desirable.
On a long American highway journey, the more persistent experience is the transition between a steady cruise and a small change of pace. In town, it is the ease of moving a large car smoothly. Those situations deserve as much attention as a maximum-output figure when deciding whether the Mulsanne suits you.
A buyer accustomed to a sharply responding sports car should approach it with an open mind. The Mulsanne offers a different relationship between input and result. Allow enough time in the driver's seat to decide whether its manner adds something useful to the garage.

The cabin belongs in the engineering story
Bentley described more than 400 hours of work to create a Mulsanne, including substantial time devoted to its leather interior. Its historical account also discusses hand-selected veneers and solid wood beneath the door trim.
These details make craftsmanship tangible. Look at the continuity of grain, the transitions between materials and how the colors work in daylight. A cabin specification becomes an environment occupied for hours, rather than a short list of options to rank by price.
Choose around actual use. Someone who usually drives alone may value front-seat comfort and an understated interior most. A household that regularly travels together should spend meaningful time in the rear as well. Neither priority requires chasing a particular badge.
Place it accurately in a search
The photographs here show an early standard-wheelbase Mulsanne. Later Speed and Extended Wheelbase derivatives introduced different priorities; their equipment and figures should not be casually applied to this car.
Bentley confirmed the end of Mulsanne production in June 2020. That makes today's decision an example-specific used-car purchase. Build a current USD budget around condition, specialist support and any necessary work, with separate allowances for acquisition and ownership.
A carefully chosen Mulsanne can offer something unusually specific: substantial performance delivered within a handcrafted, unhurried touring experience. Understanding that purpose is more useful than trying to make it win the wrong comparison.
