The Tudor Black Bay 54 makes a useful case for trying a watch before deciding from its diameter. A 37 mm case can sound modest beside larger sports watches, yet the complete fit depends on the bracelet, clasp and the way the watch sits through an ordinary day. The black-dial reference M79000N-0001 offers a particularly clear way to evaluate those details.
Start with the exact configuration
Tudor’s reference-specific specification lists a 37 mm stainless-steel case, 11.2 mm thickness and 20 mm lug width. It pairs a domed black dial and sapphire crystal with a three-link steel bracelet and T-fit clasp. Identify this reference before comparing photographs, because other Black Bay 54 combinations use different colors or straps.
Tudor relates the model’s proportions to its reference 7922 dive-watch heritage. That is design context, rather than a reason to treat a modern watch as vintage. The useful question is whether this compact case, contemporary bracelet and straightforward display suit the way you actually dress and move.
Give the clasp a proper trial
In its 2023 Black Bay 54 press material, Tudor describes five tool-free T-fit adjustment positions across an 8 mm range. This gives the wearer a way to refine the bracelet’s length after its basic sizing has been established.
Ask the retailer to size the bracelet first, then show how the adjustment operates. Try the watch with your hand relaxed, while bending your wrist and under a shirt cuff. Check whether the clasp sits comfortably beneath the wrist and whether the watch slides farther than you prefer. A loose demonstration bracelet can disguise the benefits of a smaller case.
For a pre-owned example, count the supplied spare links and confirm the installed clasp. An attractive asking price becomes less informative when necessary sizing parts are missing. If considering the rubber-strap alternative, request a separate fitting: the press material describes a strap that can be cut to size, which makes its existing length important when buying used.
Understand the uncomplicated display
The MT5400 is a self-winding mechanical movement with approximately 70 hours of reserve. Tudor identifies this reference as COSC-certified. Its time-only layout has no date display, leaving the dial visually simple and removing a calendar correction from the routine after the watch has stopped.
During a viewing, have the seller demonstrate winding and time setting. Check legibility in subdued indoor light as well as the bright display area. The bezel’s relatively spare markings also deserve a look at normal reading distance. Decide whether those choices make the watch easier for you to use, rather than assuming a minimal dial suits every owner.
Separate fit from condition
Tudor publishes a 200-meter water-resistance rating for this reference, but an individual used watch’s condition still needs verification before water exposure. Review the crown, crystal, bracelet and service history with a qualified professional. Photographs can help identify a configuration; they cannot establish its current sealing or mechanical health.
Tudor’s five-year guarantee terms also make the completed retailer guarantee card important and identify exclusions. Check the actual coverage remaining rather than assuming every offered example starts a new five-year period.
Request a written US-dollar quote including applicable tax, any needed links and disclosed service work. The Black Bay 54’s strongest argument is the combination you can experience directly: manageable proportions, useful adjustment and a dial you enjoy reading. Give those everyday qualities enough time on the wrist to make the decision meaningful.
