The Mercedes-AMG S65 coupe’s V12 naturally attracts the first question. Its suspension deserves the second. In the C217 generation, Mercedes combined the large coupe’s performance with a system able to prepare for road undulations and deliberately lean the body into a bend.

For a prospective owner, that offers a different way to evaluate the car. Look beyond whether it feels soft or firm. Ask how its body movements affect the people traveling inside, and whether that character suits the roads and journeys you have in mind.

Separate the functions

Mercedes-Benz’s US S-Class coupe briefing dated September 22, 2016 describes the S65’s AMG Active Sport Suspension as based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL. ROAD SURFACE SCAN uses a stereo camera to detect bumps ahead so the suspension can respond before the car reaches them.

Active Curve Tilting addresses another situation. The body leans inward during a bend, with the aim of reducing the sideways forces occupants feel. The same US account describes movement of up to 2.65 degrees. This is a modest angle serving a comfort objective, rather than a visual stunt the driver should attempt to exaggerate.

Those functions can easily become blurred in a used-car description. “Active suspension” may refer to several different operations. Ask the seller or specialist to explain the actual controls and indications in the car you are viewing, using its correct manual.

Judge comfort from more than one seat

A meaningful drive includes ordinary bends taken at an appropriate speed, along with the uneven pavement you encounter regularly. Try the supported suspension settings without changing several other variables at once. The goal is a clear comparison of the car’s behavior.

Have a passenger describe what they notice, especially if the coupe will serve as a two-person touring car. The driver anticipates a corner because they are steering into it; the passenger experiences the movement differently. Their reaction is directly relevant to the purchase.

Do not treat the presence or subtlety of a sensation as a diagnosis. If the system appears inactive, ask a qualified technician to establish whether the selected mode, operating conditions or a fault explains it. There is no need to drive faster to make the effect obvious.

Read the manual as a map of the hardware

The 2015 S-Class coupe operator’s manual groups Active Body Control, ROAD SURFACE SCAN, the CURVE function and crosswind stabilization under MAGIC BODY CONTROL. It also explains that suspension behavior responds to the selected mode, road surface and vehicle load.

That description helps structure an ownership conversation. A sophisticated system has inputs, controls and mechanical elements working together. An isolated test of ride height cannot establish that every part of the experience is working properly.

Commission an inspection that can evaluate the relevant suspension systems and interpret stored faults. If the service history includes windshield, camera or suspension work, ask the specialist what verification records should accompany it. The useful outcome is a clear technical explanation of the present car, rather than a generic promise that all electronics work.

Choose the experience you will use

The S65 coupe makes the strongest sense when its engineering supports relaxed, deliberate travel. Consider the whole journey: leaving home, joining traffic, following a winding road and arriving with a passenger who still feels comfortable.

The engine supplies an important part of that appeal. Curve mode reveals another part of the original brief: managing a powerful luxury coupe around its occupants. A well-chosen example should make both aspects understandable before you take ownership.
