A McLaren 620R’s equipment list tells only part of its story. The roadgoing coupe grew from the 570S GT4 competition program, and its motorsport-derived suspension makes the car’s present setup particularly important. A buyer needs to know how the dampers, rear spoiler, wheels and tires have been prepared together.
The most useful starting document is the US-English 620R owner’s-handbook supplement, in its January 29, 2020 edition. It describes details that a short launch announcement can easily compress. Keep that supplement with the main handbook and the record of the individual car’s installed equipment.
Two adjustments, different numbers
For the manually adjustable dampers described in the supplement, McLaren lists 32 compression positions and 35 rebound positions. The two adjustments address different phases of suspension movement. They should not be collapsed into an assumption that both offer 32 settings.
The handbook provides separate recommendations for bumpy roads, combined road-and-track use and smooth circuits. That distinction is useful before any viewing appointment: explain the roads you expect to drive and ask the retailer to identify the configuration currently on the car.
Have the record name the installed dampers, the settings at each corner and who last adjusted them. The handbook cautions that changes affect handling and should be made symmetrically. A written configuration gives a specialist something concrete to verify; a seller’s description of a comfortable setup does not establish the settings.

Tires change the operating brief
Pirelli’s January 13, 2020 account identifies the original road fitment as MC-marked P Zero Trofeo R tires, sized 225/35 R19 at the front and 285/35 R20 at the rear. Its optional P Zero slick was developed for circuit use.
Before a road evaluation, confirm that suitable road tires are installed. Inspect their current specification, condition and age rather than treating an old original set as automatically preferable. Ask a McLaren retailer about the approved replacement choice for the individual car and intended use.
The US supplement also describes a tire-monitoring setting for slick use and the need to change it back when road tires return. This makes the handover more than a physical wheel swap. The car’s configuration record should say which tires are fitted and which relevant setting has been selected.
Record the wing position
The rear spoiler has three positions. More angle changes both rear downforce and drag, while the factory’s lowest-angle position reflects an overall aerodynamic balance. Its appearance in a parked photograph cannot tell you whether the complete car is prepared appropriately for your intended drive.
McLaren assigns spoiler adjustment and wheel changes to a McLaren retailer in the US supplement. Have the retailer explain and document those operations. A casual promise that you can switch everything around at home misses an important part of the manufacturer’s guidance.
Buy a coherent configuration
Request the original build specification alongside records for replacement suspension parts, wheels and aero components. A used example may differ from the launch configuration. Identify changes first, then have the specialist explain their condition and suitability without assuming every deviation has the same significance.
Plan an ordinary legal-speed road evaluation after the safety and setup checks. Pay attention to seating, low-speed maneuvering and the ride on surfaces resembling your own routes. Separately confirm the support, equipment and event requirements for any future circuit use.
The 620R’s distinctive engineering is easier to enjoy when its setup is legible. Include that setup record, the matching handbooks and a specialist’s findings in the purchase file before comparing final US-dollar proposals or arranging transport.
