A Countach search can begin with a familiar silhouette and quickly become a comparison of very different cars. For a US buyer focused on the 5000 Quattrovalvole, the most useful first step is to make the specification precise. The QV belongs to a particular stage of Countach development, with distinctions that deserve more attention than a broad model label.

Lamborghini’s historical timeline dates the Quattrovalvole’s arrival to 1985. The engine grew to 5.2 liters and gained four valves per cylinder. The manufacturer lists 455 CV for one configuration and 420 CV for the injection version. Those are the factory’s metric-power figures; they should not be silently relabeled as US SAE horsepower.

Place the QV in the sequence

In its retrospective on Countach production, Lamborghini identifies the Quattrovalvole period as 1985–1988. It describes the raised engine-cover section associated with the larger, four-valve engine. The preceding 5000 S used a 4.8-liter V12, while the subsequent 25th Anniversary brought further changes to the body’s aerodynamic details.

For a shortlist, write the requested model in full: Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole coupe. Then add the desired fuel-system configuration, driving side and tolerance for modifications. This gives a sourcing discussion more direction than a request for an eighties Countach with a wing.

Photographs are useful for checking obvious consistency. They cannot independently establish the original build or the car’s complete mechanical identity.

Separate original configuration from later work

Request the chassis identification, available factory or original-delivery documentation, and the history of restoration or modification. Have a marque specialist reconcile those records with the car. Ask specifically which engine and fuel-system components are presently fitted and whether they correspond to the documented configuration.

If a seller describes a conversion, obtain the invoice, installer’s name, component details and any retained original parts. If the description is simply restored, ask which systems were rebuilt and what the work was intended to reproduce. A restoration can involve different choices about authenticity, appearance and regular use.

Keep those choices visible in the comparison. Two equally attractive QVs may answer different ownership briefs once their histories are understood.

Make the US paperwork part of the file

For an example already in the United States, request the title information and documentation explaining its arrival and original market where relevant. Ask your chosen specialist and registration adviser to identify anything requiring clarification before a deposit or transport arrangement.

Avoid assuming that one car’s history answers the registration or emissions questions for another car or another state. Establish the requirements for your actual vehicle and destination through the appropriate authorities. Mechanical identity and paperwork should tell a coherent story.

This is also a sensible stage to identify the workshop that would maintain the car. Discuss the exact configuration with that shop, then ask what information it needs to evaluate support and any deferred work.

Compare condition after identity

Once the specification is established, commission a detailed inspection of the engine, fuel system, cooling, driveline and chassis. Request a controlled cold start and an appropriate road evaluation. Have the specialist distinguish documented maintenance from work still required.

Try the seating position, controls and entry procedure yourself, with the seller’s guidance. Include the intended storage and transport arrangements in the plan.

The QV’s engineering history is a large part of its appeal. Buying a clearly identified example allows that history to support the decision, while a careful inspection establishes what the next chapter will require.
