The 2005–2006 Ford GT offers a very specific version of the American supercar: a mid-mounted, supercharged V8 driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transaxle. Understanding that original arrangement gives a US buyer a useful framework for sorting factory specification, later modifications and present condition.

Begin by identifying the generation in every document and conversation. This guide concerns the roadgoing 2005–2006 coupe. Its engine, controls and ownership information belong to that car; later Ford GT material describes a different development program.

Establish the original mechanical brief

Ford’s period US specification lists a 5.4-liter, double-overhead-camshaft V8 with four valves per cylinder, an aluminum block and a supercharger. The published output was 550 hp at 6,500 rpm and 500 lb-ft at 3,750 rpm. A six-speed manual and a rear-drive layout complete the basic picture.

Those are original manufacturer specifications, rather than a measurement of a car advertised today. Before discussing performance, ask whether its engine calibration, supercharger drive, exhaust or other powertrain parts have been changed. Request invoices and an exact parts list instead of accepting a vague description such as lightly modified.

A stock-looking engine bay does not establish its software configuration. Have a qualified specialist explain what can be verified, what records are missing and whether any proposed return to factory specification includes all necessary hardware and calibration work.

Use the correct owner’s guide

The US owner’s guide gives the service conversation a more precise starting point than a generic supercar checklist. It includes instructions for the dry-sump engine-oil system and separate information about cooling circuits. Ask the inspecting shop to follow the guide applicable to the car’s model year and build configuration.

Have the seller demonstrate the routine an owner actually needs: locating the correct fluid checks, recognizing warning indicators and understanding the documented maintenance schedule. Do not improvise an oil-level reading or add fluid simply because a procedure from another Ford seems familiar.

Service dates matter alongside mileage. Request evidence of work after extended storage, then have the specialist identify any time-dependent maintenance that remains due. A collection car can need attention even when its odometer has moved very little.

Give the manual a complete evaluation

Evaluate starting, clutch take-up, shift selection and driveline behavior after the preliminary safety checks. Use a route with room to operate the car normally and stay within legal road speeds. The appointment is an assessment of condition and suitability, with no need to reproduce period acceleration claims.

Confirm that the seating position gives you consistent pedal control. Check visibility, access and the space needed to open the roof-cut doors in the garage you intend to use. A car that feels straightforward in an open parking lot may present a different daily routine beside a wall or another vehicle.

Read the specification record carefully

Wheels, stripes, audio equipment and paint should be checked against the original order or window sticker where available. Ford offered different factory appearance combinations, so one photograph is an incomplete specification record. Document later changes without automatically describing every difference as a defect.

For a US purchase, bring the service evidence, independent inspection and itemized proposal together before arranging enclosed transport. Keep the vehicle’s asking price separate from dealer charges, transport and any tax or registration estimates. The strongest shortlist will connect the original Ford GT engineering brief with a clear account of the particular car being offered.
