The Ferrari Portofino M can look like a modest evolution in photographs. Its most consequential changes are harder to photograph: a different transmission, revised power delivery and a broader set of vehicle-dynamics controls. For a US buyer seeking a convertible that can handle both ordinary errands and longer drives, those details deserve more attention than the extra letter on the badge.

The model arrived in 2020. Ferrari's October 2020 introduction to its road presentation identifies the essential changes: 620 cv, an eight-speed gearbox and a five-position Manettino with Race mode. The M stands for modificata, reflecting an engineering revision rather than merely a trim package.

An extra ratio is only part of the story

The Portofino M's dual-clutch transmission has eight forward ratios. Ferrari's technical release describes a smaller clutch module and revised shift strategies, including attention to low-speed behavior and stop-start traffic. The engineering goal was broader than adding another gear for a specification sheet.

The same document explains that Variable Boost Management shapes torque delivery according to the selected gear. Higher ratios can use more torque, while lower ratios receive a differently managed delivery. Consequently, a single peak-torque number will not fully describe how the car responds in the gear you are using.

On a test drive, spend time at the speeds your life actually involves. Check gentle pullaways, rolling traffic and the transition from a steady cruise to modest acceleration. Try automatic operation and deliberate paddle selections. You should leave knowing whether the car responds intuitively, not simply whether it can shift quickly.

Race mode has a specific technical meaning

The five-position Manettino expands the Portofino's dynamic-control choices. Ferrari's October 9, 2020 model feature highlights Wet and Race settings, alongside the introduction of Side Slip Control 6.0 and Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer on this two-plus-seat spider.

Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer uses software-controlled brake-pressure adjustments to influence lateral behavior. On the Portofino M, the technical release says it operates in Race mode. That is a specific control function, not a guarantee that the car will prevent every loss of grip.

Have the dealer explain the settings while parked, including the stability-control implications. A public-road evaluation does not need an experiment near the handling limit. If exploring the differences at speed is important to you, arrange suitable instruction in a controlled environment.

Read the power figure accurately

The factory's 620 cv is approximately 612 mechanical horsepower. It is a useful reference point, but the combination of throttle calibration, gearing and shift behavior determines much of the everyday impression. A car with a tune or modified exhaust may not represent the standard configuration you intended to compare.

Ask for the build specification and modification history before forming conclusions. Compare a Portofino and Portofino M under similar conditions if the distinction is central to your purchase.

Equipment can matter as much as the update

Ferrari described several driver-assistance features as optional, including adaptive cruise control and a surround-view camera. Do not assume that a used example carries every feature shown in a brochure. Verify the equipment on the actual car and test the functions you intend to use.

Finally, assess the cabin with your usual passenger and luggage. The rear accommodation, seating adjustment and roof configuration should fit a real trip. A well-chosen Portofino M combines its mechanical changes with the right equipment and condition for your routine, rather than winning solely on a specification comparison.
