A Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano can make a persuasive first impression while standing still. For a buyer planning to use one on American roads, the more useful question is how the chassis deals with the journey between the good corners: patched pavement, freeway joints and changes of surface.

The 599 arrived in 2006, as Ferrari’s model history records. Its suspension introduced a technical idea worth understanding before a used-car test drive. The condition of that system belongs in the buying decision alongside the V12’s sound and the chosen interior.

What SCM actually changes

Ferrari’s original 599 brochure, pages 31–35, explains its magnetorheological suspension control, abbreviated SCM. The dampers use fluid whose behavior responds to an electronically controlled magnetic field. That allows the control system to change damping in response to driving conditions.

In practical terms, damping helps control motion after the wheels or body have been disturbed. Ferrari’s brochure discusses reducing body movement during acceleration, braking and changes of direction. It also describes double-wishbone suspension geometry and rear toe control through suspension travel. The result depends on the complete assembly, rather than the damper alone.

That distinction gives the buyer a useful inspection principle: investigate springs, joints, tires, alignment and electronic control together before attributing every ride sensation to SCM.

Establish the car’s present specification

Ask for the original equipment record and invoices for subsequent suspension work. Have the inspector identify the components currently fitted and compare them with that documentation. If dampers or springs have been replaced, obtain the dates, mileage, part numbers and reason for replacement.

Treat a changed ride height as a question requiring an answer. Ask whether the changes were part of a documented package, a replacement-parts decision or a previous owner’s preference. Do the same for aftermarket wheels and tires. A visually appealing stance cannot establish how the car has been aligned or whether its components work together properly.

For a remote purchase, request clear underbody photographs as part of the professional inspection. Exterior listing photographs rarely answer these questions.

Build a repeatable road test

Use a route with several ordinary surfaces and enough time for a calm assessment. Include low-speed streets, a legal freeway section and gentle bends where permitted. Avoid potholes and any maneuver intended to find the car’s limit.

Ask the seller or technician to explain the available settings using the manual for that particular car. Where appropriate, compare settings on the same stretch at similar speeds. Record the surface, setting and sensation instead of simply calling the ride firm or soft.

Listen for knocks and note whether a wheel impact produces a single controlled movement or repeated motion. Those are observations for the specialist to investigate. They do not identify a failed part by themselves, and a passenger can provide useful notes while the driver concentrates on the road.

Make the estimate specific

Commission a chassis inspection with diagnostic equipment suitable for the 599. Ask the technician to connect any fault messages, visible wear or leaks with the road-test findings. Request separate estimates for necessary repairs and elective specification changes.

Before arranging interstate transport, decide who will complete the work and how its result will be checked. If replacement parts are needed, obtain an actual availability statement from the servicing shop rather than assuming a delivery date.

A well-chosen 599 should make sense on the roads you intend to drive. Understanding SCM turns a general impression of comfort into a more useful conversation about condition, specification and ownership.
