The Ferrari 296 GTB rewards a closer look than its cylinder count suggests. For a US buyer comparing individual examples, understanding where the electric motor sits and how the battery supports the drivetrain is more useful than treating “hybrid” as a single category. This evergreen guide explains the layout, then turns that information into a focused inspection and ownership checklist.
A compact engine and one rear electric motor
Ferrari developed a 120-degree twin-turbo V6 for the 296 GTB, positioning the turbochargers between the cylinder banks. The electric motor sits between the combustion engine and eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. A separating clutch allows the engine to disconnect for electric-only operation. Drive goes to the rear wheels. These details come from Ferrari’s original technical presentation.
That layout helps explain why two plug-in hybrid supercars can have very different personalities. Counting motors is only a starting point; their position and the driven wheels matter. With the 296 GTB, the useful question is how the gasoline and electric systems cooperate through the rear drivetrain, rather than whether the word hybrid promises a particular driving experience.
Read the figures with their conditions attached
The official specification sheet lists a 2,992 cc engine, 663 cv (about 654 hp) from combustion and a combined 830 cv (about 819 hp) in Qualify mode. It also lists a 7.45 kWh high-voltage battery. Ferrari’s quoted 1,470 kg (about 3,241 lb) dry weight requires optional lightweight content. Those qualifications matter when comparing advertisements. See Ferrari’s 296 GTB specification sheet.
Keep cv, mechanical horsepower and kilowatts labeled consistently in your comparison notes. Likewise, a dry-weight figure belongs in a separate column from a road-ready measured weight. A seller’s rounded number may be harmless, but a carefully documented specification saves time when two listings appear to describe different cars.
Why the wide V6 matters
Ferrari’s explanation of its turbocharged engines connects the wide cylinder angle with a low, compact arrangement and discusses the 296’s tuned exhaust geometry and 8,500 rpm limit. That is useful context for evaluating the engine as a complete design rather than a smaller substitute for something else. Read the company’s technical overview of turbocharging.
Make the hybrid system part of the inspection
Ask a qualified Ferrari specialist to demonstrate the actual car’s charging process, mode selection and transition between electric and combustion operation. Request a written diagnostic report and confirmation of outstanding service work. Have the specialist identify which battery-health information the factory tools can actually provide; a dashboard showing a full charge is not a complete condition assessment.
For a garage-based owner, check where the charging cable will run before delivery. Photograph the supplied equipment and match it to the vehicle documentation. If electrical work is needed, have a qualified electrician assess the installation against the charger’s requirements. Avoid assuming that another exotic’s charger, adapter or storage routine will apply.
Choose the car around your driving pattern
A weekend route, extended storage and regular short trips create different practical questions. Bring your real schedule to the inspection: how long the car sits, whether charging is convenient, and where it will be serviced. Request the manufacturer’s written storage and battery-care instructions for that specific example. The strongest evaluation combines the appeal of the V6 hybrid layout with clear evidence that the individual car is ready for the way you intend to use it.
