The BMW M4 CSL makes a convincing case in a photograph: carbon details, a pronounced rear lip and red accents marking a more focused coupe. The most important specification for a prospective owner may be hidden behind the door. BMW offered two carbon-seat arrangements with meaningfully different adjustment and comfort provisions.
For a US search, start with BMW’s May 2022 American launch release. It identifies the 2023 model with 543 hp and a stated 3,640-pound curb weight. Those figures establish the car’s historical factory specification; the more useful next question is which seat configuration is actually fitted to the example you are considering.
The full bucket changes the relationship
The standard M Carbon full bucket uses a fixed backrest. Fore-and-aft movement is manual, while height adjustment requires workshop work. Heating, powered adjustment and lumbar adjustment are absent. BMW credited this seating arrangement with a 53-pound reduction against the standard M4 Competition seats.
That description should change the viewing appointment. Sit in the car wearing the kind of shoes and clothing you normally drive in. Set the steering wheel, reach the pedals and check whether you can maintain comfortable arm and knee positions without sliding away from the backrest. A photograph of someone else looking comfortable answers none of those questions.
Allow time to remain seated. An immediate feeling of support can differ from the experience after twenty minutes. If two people will regularly drive, have both try it. Workshop-adjusted height introduces an ownership decision when the drivers need substantially different positions.

The alternative was a factory choice
BMW’s US release also lists heated, power-adjustable M Carbon bucket seats as a no-cost option. It assigns them a smaller 21-pound saving against the same standard-seat baseline. Consequently, a CSL with the adjustable buckets can represent an intentional factory specification.
The search brief should say which arrangement you want. Request the original equipment record and clear photographs of the seat structure and controls. Do that before comparing asking prices or commissioning a distant inspection. “Carbon seats” is too broad a description for this car.
If a seller reports a later conversion, ask for the original configuration and the installation record. You need enough detail to discuss compatibility and support with a qualified BMW specialist. Keep any removed original parts and their documentation within the transaction discussion rather than assuming they accompany the car.
Lightweight construction reaches beyond the cabin
BMW M’s March 2023 model retrospective describes carbon-fiber body components, the integrated rear spoiler, model-specific suspension and a titanium rear silencer. It also confirms the two-seat layout and rear-wheel drive. The seats belong to a coordinated performance project.
The ownership implication is personal. Decide whether you want the most concentrated version of that experience every time you open the door, or whether adjustment makes the car usable for more journeys. Neither answer needs to come from another owner’s lap-time priorities.
Before committing, drive a legal, representative route in the configuration you intend to buy. Include ordinary pavement and the low-speed access you use frequently. Keep stability assistance engaged and judge the controls, visibility and seating relationship at normal speeds.
A CSL purchase becomes clearer when its distinctive hardware serves an actual plan. Begin with who will sit in it, how often they will drive and where the car will go. The right seats can make the rest of its engineering far easier to enjoy.
