A second-generation Audi R8 is a useful reminder that an engine layout does not define an entire model range. The naturally aspirated V10 is the family resemblance, but the driven wheels, transmission and version-specific equipment can produce substantially different ownership propositions. The word “performance” in a listing is therefore the beginning of the investigation, rather than a complete technical description.

For US enthusiasts, the most helpful approach is to establish the generation first and the precise version second. This evergreen guide explains the distinctions without assuming that every R8 shares the specification of the most powerful example.

The generation changes the transmission conversation

Audi unveiled the second-generation R8 in 2015 and introduced it to the US market in 2016. The company’s US heritage overview describes its multi-material structure, revised V10 and S tronic dual-clutch transmission. The celebrated gated manual belongs to the earlier generation’s story; it should not be assumed available simply because an advertisement describes an R8 as analog or driver-focused.

That distinction is especially important when cross-shopping cars by engine alone. A V10 first-generation example and a V10 second-generation example may appeal for different reasons. Write down the transmission type alongside model year before comparing mileages or optional finishes.

Quattro and rear-wheel drive are separate branches

The second generation began with a revised quattro system, while the RWS later brought rear-wheel drive into the family. Audi subsequently developed the V10 performance RWD. The latter uses a mechanical limited-slip differential and a seven-speed S tronic gearbox, with suspension and control-system tuning specific to rear-wheel drive.

Audi’s technical presentation of the performance RWD also identifies the aluminum and carbon-fiber-reinforced-plastic Audi Space Frame construction. Its European engine specification is 570 PS, approximately 562 mechanical horsepower. Keep the market and unit attached to that number, particularly when a listing borrows text from an overseas review.

Rear-wheel drive does not automatically mean a car is more suitable for every enthusiast, and all-wheel drive does not eliminate the importance of tires or conditions. The meaningful question is which configuration suits your intended use and preferred responses. A controlled evaluation at ordinary road speeds can reveal steering feel, ride and transmission behavior without attempting to explore the limits of either drivetrain.

Special editions require their own evidence

Names such as RWS, Decennium and GT should not be treated as interchangeable decorative packages. Audi’s US heritage record identifies the Decennium as a V10 anniversary edition and the second-generation GT as a 602-hp rear-drive model with particular aerodynamic and wheel equipment. Those distinctions deserve confirmation in the actual vehicle’s documentation.

Likewise, a carbon-fiber spoiler or bronze wheel finish is not enough to establish an edition’s identity. Parts can be changed, and the presence of a recognizable exterior detail does not establish the full factory configuration.

Build a mechanically meaningful comparison

For each shortlisted car, record generation, original market, driven wheels, factory version, brakes, seats and any documented suspension or exhaust changes. Then compare cars with their differences visible. This avoids treating two very different specifications as direct substitutes merely because both are V10 coupes.

The R8’s lasting appeal includes the consistency of its mid-engine idea and the variety within it. Understanding that variety makes the search more interesting: the goal becomes finding the particular interpretation you want, supported by evidence about the car in front of you.
