The Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe deserves a different kind of test drive from a conventional luxury sports car. Its appeal is closely tied to compact packaging and a direct driving experience. The same qualities make it particularly important to establish whether the cabin, steering effort and luggage arrangement suit the way you will actually use it.
For US buyers, the starting point should be the North American specification. European launch figures and dry weights often travel into advertisements without their original context.
Use the right weight figure
Alfa Romeo's 2015 North American specification sheet lists the Coupe at 2,465 pounds curb weight and 2,315 pounds dry. Those are different measures of the same model, not interchangeable claims. The sheet separately identifies the Spider, which should also remain a distinct comparison.
It describes a carbon-fiber monocoque, a mid-mounted turbocharged four-cylinder engine, rear-wheel drive and a six-speed twin-clutch transmission. The steering is a manual rack-and-pinion system. That last detail means unassisted steering; it does not mean the car has a manual gearbox.
Before comparing listings, identify the body style, model year, original equipment and any modifications. A lower advertised weight is not useful if the seller has copied a figure for another market.
Begin the test before starting the engine
Get in and out using your normal shoes and clothing. Set the seat and steering wheel to a workable position, then repeat the process with the door opened only as far as your real parking space would allow.
Check visibility through the mirrors and over your shoulders. Place your everyday phone, sunglasses and other small items where they can remain secure. If you plan to carry a passenger frequently, perform the exercise with both seats occupied.
This is not a contest to prove that you can tolerate a small cabin. The question is whether the routine feels pleasant enough that you will choose the car regularly.
Give manual steering a realistic trial
Ask for a route with a safe parking exercise and ordinary low-speed turns, followed by open-road driving within the speed limit. Evaluate the effort across those situations. Do not infer how the car feels in motion solely from turning the steering wheel while stationary.
Have an Alfa Romeo specialist investigate pulling, vibration or inconsistent response. Request the current tire specification and any alignment records. If the suspension, wheels or steering-related components have been altered, obtain the details and ask how the setup differs from standard.
A seller's description of sharper handling is a claim to assess, not a substitute for documentation and a suitable road test.
Pack for the actual trip
The US specification sheet lists 3.7 cubic feet of cargo space. Bring your usual weekend bags and confirm their fit with the seller's permission. Decide where the items needed during travel will go, and follow the owner's instructions for loading and storage.
On the road, listen to the car at a steady cruising speed and on rougher pavement. Test ventilation, air conditioning and the installed audio equipment. Personal tolerance for sound and ride quality is difficult to discover from a specification sheet.
Finally, commission a model-appropriate inspection, including the structure and any disclosed repair history. Build the purchase around condition, documentation and a usable maintenance plan.
A well-chosen 4C makes its focused design part of the pleasure. The best example for you is one whose compromises feel intentional every time you drive it.
